Your consumer unit, often known as a fuse board, is the central hub of your electrical system. It distributes electricity around your property and protects your circuits by shutting off power when a fault is detected.

When Should You Replace or Upgrade a Consumer Unit?

You should consider replacing your consumer unit if:
-
It’s outdated – Older fuse boards with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection don’t meet current safety standards.
-
You’re experiencing electrical issues – Frequent tripping, flickering lights, or unusual burning smells may indicate faults or an overloaded board.
-
You’re carrying out renovations – Adding new circuits or high-powered appliances may require a modern unit with greater capacity and protection.
-
You’re buying or selling a property – An upgraded consumer unit can improve safety and potentially increase property value.
-
It has failed an EICR – If your Electrical Installation Condition Report highlights issues with your consumer unit, replacement may be advised.

Why Upgrade?

-
Improved safety: Modern units include RCDs and RCBOs that cut off the power in milliseconds in the event of a fault, helping to prevent electric shock and fire.
-
Compliance: Brings your property in line with current wiring regulations (BS 7671 – 18th Edition).
-
Peace of mind: A new consumer unit ensures your electrical installation is reliable, efficient, and protected for the long term.
